In both baseball and softball, regardless of age and level, having good hip hinge, maintaining good posture and bat path throughout the swing is really important.
One of the ways that we teach this is with the Football Throw Drill. In this drill, we're going to have our hitters set up and start in a progression beginning with
launch position. So the first thing they'll do is start in launch position and they're going to really focus on hip hinging and throwing the football underhand in a good spiral.
If you see that good spiral, you know they're maintaining their hip hinge and their side bend is really good.
In doing this drill, you can progress from launch position into a full swing. This time I'm going to have the hitter get in their normal stance and do the full swing, working on hip pinching and throwing. When this drill is done correctly You can see she maintains her hip hinge throughout the swing, keeps her direction and her shoulder tilt through the swing.
If you're trying to help your hitters work on hip hinge and maintaining their posture, The Football Throw Drill is a great drill for that.
